Chain Custody
Two figures meet at the wrists, shackled by a chain that catches the light like jewelry, rendered in magenta-pink flesh against a flat forest-green field that offers no exit. The gold links are too beautiful for what they do. One hand opens, not in offering but in the exhausted posture of someone who has stopped fighting the weight. A fist clenches below, still green, still held. The silhouetted head turns away, already somewhere else, which is the most honest thing in the image. Constraint dressed as ornament is the oldest trick, and this painting refuses to look away from it.
