Twenty-three specimens pinned against crimson like evidence in a case nobody reported. A dark spathe stands beside a blush-pink rose that has not yet decided to open. Cream-latticed banksia towers over a single bell-shaped bud the color of old ivory. Forest-green leaves lie flat, unashamed of being leaves. The arrangement is taxonomic and ruthless, the tenderness buried inside the precision. Every living thing here was once connected to something larger, and now it answers only to the frame.
